The Secret, Book & Scone Society by Ellery Adams

๐Ÿ“š The Secret, Book & Scone Society Review: Scones, Secrets, and a Surprising Hit! ⭐⭐⭐⭐

๐Ÿ”” A Quick Heads-Up: Content Warnings

Before we dive into this bookish adventure, I want to give you a heads-up about some heavier themes. This cozy mystery deals with:

  • Physical and emotional abuse

  • Child abuse and teen pregnancy

  • Car accidents and fire-related injuries

  • Sexual assault and domestic violence

  • Sexism and misogyny

  • Murder and medical trauma

  • Infidelity and substance use

Now, with that out of the way, let's get to the good stuff!

๐Ÿ’ญ My Cozy Mystery Confession

Okay, I'll admit it—I'm usually not a cozy mystery fan. ๐Ÿ™ˆ

I go into them with all the excitement of a kid in a candy store, only to walk out feeling like I just ate a sugar-free lollipop. You know the drill: silly plots, far-fetched storylines, and characters flatter than a pancake. I've been burned before (not literally, thank goodness), so my expectations were somewhere between "meh" and "please just entertain me for a few hours."

But y'all... this book actually delivered! ๐ŸŽ‰

๐Ÿ“– What's This Book About Anyway?

The Secret, Book & Scone Society by Ellery Adams kicks off a series set in Miracle Springs, North Carolina—a charming little town famous for its healing thermal springs . People flock there hoping for physical and emotional healing, and honestly, who wouldn't want to soak their troubles away in a hot spring?

Our main character is Nora Pennington, owner of Miracle Books and a self-proclaimed bibliotherapist . That's right—she prescribes books like medicine! ๐Ÿฉบ๐Ÿ“š

Spoiler Warning! ⚠️ I'm about to spill ALL the tea, so if you haven't read the book, bookmark this and come back later!

๐Ÿ•ต️‍♀️ The Plot: Secrets, Murder, and Comfort Scones

Nora meets a troubled businessman named Neil Parrish on a park bench. He's stressed about some shady business dealings and wants to make things right before his partners arrive. Nora, being the book whisperer she is, tells him to grab a "comfort scone" from the Gingerbread House Bakery (because obviously scones solve everything) and then come back for a bibliotherapy session.

Plot twist: Neil never shows up. Instead, he ends up dead on the train tracks . ๐Ÿš‚๐Ÿ’€

Nora teams up with three other local women who each have their own baggage:

  • Hester Winthrop – the bakery owner who creates magical comfort scones

  • Estella Sadler – the glamorous salon owner with a dark past

  • June Dixon – the spa employee who recommended Nora's bibliotherapy to Neil

The local sheriff, affectionately nicknamed "Sheriff Toad" (because he's sexist and useless), wants to rule Neil's death a suicide. But our four heroines know better, so they form the Secret, Book, and Scone Society .

Here's the membership requirement: you must share your deepest, darkest secret. No secrets, no entry! ๐Ÿคซ

The women discover that Neil was involved in a real estate scam with his company, Pine Ridge Properties. They were running a mortgage fraud scheme using "straw buyers" and skimming funds before disappearing . Neil wanted to confess, so someone silenced him—permanently.

As the investigation heats up, the body count rises. Fenton Greer, one of Neil's partners, ends up poisoned at the thermal pools, and Estella gets arrested for his murder. But here's the kicker—the women dig deeper and uncover that the scheme involved Sheriff Hendricks' brother, a complicit banker, and a real estate agent having a secret affair with another partner.

The big reveal? Bob Loman, a local bartender, killed Neil by luring him to the train tracks. Bob's parents were ruined by a similar real estate scam years ago, which motivated him to work for the criminals—until he helped the women expose everything. ๐Ÿป

In the final confrontation, the women are held hostage at the Meadows model home with the gas burners turned on. Nora's bound hands manage to unlock a sliding door, and while she gets dragged back into the fire, Jed (the hot paramedic who's been crushing on Nora) pulls her to safety.

Nora wakes up in the hospital three days later, having relived the trauma of the fire that caused her scars. The big reveal? Nora's secret: four years ago, she discovered her husband was cheating, drove drunk, and hit a car carrying a woman and her toddler. She pulled them both from the burning wreck, saving the boy but sustaining severe burns .

The women wrap up the case, the criminals are arrested, and Nora opens up a hidden compartment in the society's coffee table to keep all their secrets safe. The book ends with Nora offering food and shelter to a young woman who reminds her of herself—someone in need of the healing that books once provided.

✨ What Worked For Me

Fast-Paced and Engaging

The story moves at a clip that kept me turning pages. No dragging, no filler—just good mystery with enough twists to keep things interesting.

Surprisingly Complex Characters

For a cozy mystery, these characters have DEPTH. Each woman has a legitimately heartbreaking backstory that makes you root for them . They're not just cardboard cutouts solving crimes—they're real people trying to heal.

The Bookish Vibes

Bibliotherapy? Yes, please! ๐Ÿ“š The literary references and bookish discussions made my book-loving heart sing.

The Friendship Dynamic

Watching these women learn to trust each other and share their vulnerabilities was genuinely touching . It's not just about solving a murder—it's about healing through connection.

The Setting

Miracle Springs sounds like a place I'd love to visit. Bookshops, bakeries, scones, wine, and hot springs—what's not to love? ๐Ÿท๐Ÿง

๐Ÿค” What Could Have Been Better

Look, I'll be honest—some parts are a bit over-the-top. Comfort scones that fix all your problems? A bit much. But in the cozy mystery world, that's par for the course.

Also, the romance subplot with Jed felt a little rushed and awkward at times . But hey, it's the first book in a series, so maybe it develops more later.
