Deep End by Ali Hazelwood
π♀️ Dive Into the Deep End: A Steamy, Academic, Swedish Sensation? ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Wait... did it just get hot in here, or is that just the latest Ali Hazelwood release? πΆ️
If you’ve been following my blog, you know I’m a total nerd for anything involving lab coats and high IQs, but Hazelwood decided to throw some elite athleticism into the mix this time.
Buckle up, besties, because we’re headed to Stanford University for a story that is equal parts "I need a PhD" and "I need a cold shower." π§
⚠️ Content & Trigger Warnings
Before we dive into the deep end (pun absolutely intended), please be aware that this book handles some heavy topics:
Sexual content (Extremely explicit / BDSM themes)
Physical abuse (Past trauma/restraining orders)
Toxic family dynamics
Mental health struggles (Trauma-induced anxiety/Panic)
Bullying & academic stress
Brief mention of death
π§ The Vibes: Nerds, Speedos, and Accents
Let’s get one thing straight: Lukas Blomqvist is a Swedish swimming champion. πΈπͺ
If you’ve ever wondered why certain accents make us lose our entire minds, this book is Exhibit A. Listening to the narration felt like a personal attack on my productivity. Why are Swedish accents so sexy? I don’t make the rules, I just melt by them. π«
As a fellow nerd, I lived for the academic banter and the biology research project. However, despite being a sports romance, I am happy to report that I still have zero athletic bones in my body. I’ll stay on the bleachers with my book, thanks! π
π¨ SPOILER ALERT: The Full Plot Breakdown π¨
Stop reading now if you don’t want the ending ruined! You’ve been warned! π
The Setup
Our girl Scarlett Vandermeer is a junior at Stanford and a star diver who is basically "The Twisties" personified. Ever since a horrific injury two years ago, she’s been a ball of nerves.
Enter Pen, her friend/diving captain, who drops a casual bombshell: she’s breaking up with her boyfriend, Lukas, because he’s into BDSM and she’s... well, not.
In a move that is peak "awkward friend energy," Pen basically tells Scarlett:
"Hey, you like kinky stuff, he likes kinky stuff — you guys should totally bang." π
The Spicy Middle
Scarlett and Lukas eventually stop staring at each other across the pool and actually talk.
They swap BDSM checklists (safety first, kids! π), and things escalate quickly in a science lab. Nothing says "I love science" like some high-quality oral sex among the test tubes. π§ͺπ₯
However, the book is LONG. Like, "Are we still at the pool?" long.
While the steamy scenes are elite (Ali Hazelwood is the GOAT of tension), some of the conversations felt a bit clunky and drawn out. We get a lot of back-and-forth about their feelings, their research, and Scarlett’s therapy sessions with Sam.
The Trauma & The Triumph
We find out why Scarlett is so blocked:
On the day of her big accident, her abusive father broke his restraining order and her boyfriend dumped her.
Talk about a bad day at the office. π«
Lukas, being the Swedish king he is, comforts her. She finally nails the inward dive in the middle of the night (as one does) and regains her mojo.
The Grand Finale π
Scarlett wins the NCAA championships! π₯
But the drama isn't over.
Pen sees Scarlett and Lukas kissing in the locker room and loses her mind, accusing Scarlett of stealing her life. Scarlett flees to her stepmom’s house to eat her feelings, but Pen eventually shows up to apologize for the temporary insanity.
The Ending
Scarlett impulsively flies to Sweden (get it, girl!) to find Lukas. They confess their love, and the epilogue shows them both thriving in medical school at different universities but still very much obsessed with each other. π©Ί❤️
π Final Thoughts: Is It Worth the Page Count?
I’m giving this a 4 out of 5 stars.
The Pros
Lukas is top-tier book boyfriend material.
The consent and communication regarding BDSM were handled so well.
The academic setting felt authentic and gritty.
The Cons
It felt way too long for a "lighthearted" romance.
Some dialogue felt like it needed a bit more polish to avoid the "awkward turtle" vibes. π’
If you can handle a chunky book and love a man with a heavy accent and a penchant for dominance, you’ll love this. Even if you aren't a fan of the lifestyle, Lukas might just make you a convert for 450+ pages! π
