๐Ÿ’ญ My Thoughts (aka I am STILL recovering)

Okay. WOW.

Dear Reader absolutely delivered. This book is juicy, twisty, dark, and just straight-up addictive. I went in expecting a spicy dark romance… and instead got a full-on dark academia mystery with romance woven through it—which honestly made me love it even more.

What really hooked me? The journal element. Ashley reading Abigail’s diary while trying to piece together what happened felt SO immersive. It’s like you’re solving the mystery with her ๐Ÿ•ต️‍♀️๐Ÿ“–

And can we talk about the romance??
For once, I had NO idea who she was going to end up with. That alone deserves applause because usually I’ve got it figured out by chapter two. Not here. Not even close.

Also: yes, there’s spice ๐ŸŒถ️… but surprisingly, it’s not overwhelming. The mystery, tension, and relationships take center stage, which made the spicy scenes hit harder when they did happen.

BUT—fair warning…

๐Ÿ‘‰ This is book one in a series, and the cliffhanger is BRUTAL.
Like… stare-at-the-wall-after-reading brutal.

๐Ÿง  Overview (Quick Context)

Dear Reader is the first book in the Devil’s Backbone series and blends:

  • Dark academia vibes

  • Secret societies

  • Romantic suspense

  • Psychological twists

We follow Ashley Layne, a scholarship student who gets pulled into a dangerous web of lies, privilege, and a secret society that may be responsible for multiple deaths.

๐Ÿ“– Plot Summary (FULL SPOILERS — You’ve Been Warned)

The story kicks off with a chilling diary entry: a girl claims if the diary is found, she’s already dead—and the Devil’s Backbone Society (DBS) is responsible.

๐Ÿ‘€ Immediately unsettling. We love that.

๐Ÿซ Ashley’s Introduction

Ashley is a 21-year-old trying to get by when:

  • Her car is vandalized (costing $5,800 ๐Ÿ’€)

  • She takes on extra work as a masseuse

  • Meets a client, “Heath,” who crosses boundaries… but also sparks intense chemistry

He gives her a check that conveniently covers the damage (๐Ÿšฉ๐Ÿšฉ๐Ÿšฉ), and things spiral from there.

๐Ÿ’ Enter the Elite World

Ashley’s life flips when:

  • Her mom marries into wealth

  • She gets a full scholarship to Nevaeh University

There, she meets:

  • Nate (her awful stepbrother ๐Ÿ˜’)

  • His rich, chaotic friend group:

    • Carter ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

    • Royce ๐Ÿ˜

    • Heath (yes… THAT Heath ๐Ÿ‘€)

And surprise! The massage situation? A setup.
Yeah. These boys are already on thin ice.

๐Ÿ““ The Diary Discovery

Ashley finds a hidden diary written by Abigail Monstera, a former scholarship student.

The diary reveals:

  • The existence of DBS

  • A deadly initiation ritual

  • Suspicious “suicides” that might actually be murder

Ashley becomes obsessed with figuring out the truth.

๐ŸŽญ The Games Begin

From here, things escalate FAST:

  • Ashley gets pulled into DBS events

  • She fake-dates Heath ๐Ÿ’‹

  • Carter drags her into a twisted competition

  • Secrets, alliances, and betrayals pile up

At a gala, things get chaotic (rubber ducks?? yes really ๐Ÿฆ†๐Ÿ˜‚), but beneath the absurdity is something deeply sinister.

๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท Paris Trip Gone WRONG

Ashley wins a trip to Paris with Carter, and things get:

  • Emotional

  • Violent

  • VERY spicy ๐ŸŒถ️

Carter literally beats a man (possibly to death ๐Ÿ˜ณ), and then… they hook up in an alley. Because of course they do.

Romantic? Questionable.
Entertaining? Absolutely.

๐Ÿ’€ Things Turn DARKER

Back on campus:

  • A decapitated body shows up in Ashley’s bed (!!!!)

  • She’s targeted, abducted, and humiliated in a terrifying scene

  • Someone is clearly trying to frame Nate and manipulate events

Ashley realizes:
๐Ÿ‘‰ Someone is recreating the events from Abigail’s diary
๐Ÿ‘‰ SHE might be the next victim

๐Ÿ”ฅ The Final Spiral

The boys start acting… off:

  • Heath suffers from severe nightmares

  • Carter and Royce behave strangely

  • There are hints of mind control / manipulation

Then everything COLLAPSES:

Ashley finds:

  • Heath, Carter, and Royce in a trance-like state

  • They burn down a building

  • They have NO memory of it

And then… the ending.

๐Ÿ˜ฑ THE ENDING (I AM NOT OKAY)

Ashley walks into Heath’s room and finds:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Heath has hanged himself.

Just like that.

No resolution.
No explanation.
Just devastation.

๐Ÿ˜ต Final Thoughts

This book is:

  • Dark

  • Twisty

  • Emotionally chaotic

  • And completely addictive

I loved:
✔️ The diary mystery element
✔️ The unpredictable romance
✔️ The creepy secret society vibes
✔️ The constant feeling that something is VERY wrong

I did NOT love:
❌ That cliffhanger emotionally wrecked me ๐Ÿ˜ญ

Would I immediately read book two?
๐Ÿ‘‰ YES. Without hesitation.

Rating: 5/5 Stars

This one hooked me from the start and did NOT let go.
