Maybe Not by Colleen Hoover
Maybe Not is the companion short story for the first installment, Maybe Now. It centers more around the side characters of the first book, Warren and Bridgette. Colleen Hoover is just an amazing writer. Absolutely gifted. The writing is like smooth silk, romantic, funny, and satisfying.
The book starts with Warren accidentally running into a new girl in his shower. They scream at each other. Warren finds out his roommate and best friend, Ridge, is letting a new girl Bridgette staying at their apartment since one of the roommates moved out. Even though their first encounter wasn't friendly, Warren is insanely attracted to Bridgette. Turns out, both of them love playing pranks, so each started playing pranks on the other.
Bridgette works at Hooters, and the outfit does a number on Warren. Warren also overhears that Bridgette has starred in a porno before. This makes Warren watch every single porn he can get his hands on, in hopes of finding Bridgette's porn. This gets him nowhere except becoming very unproductive. Ridge catches him doing this, and the situation is more awkward when Warren finds out that Ridge thinks Bridgette might be Ridge's half sister.
Bridgette and Ridge submit for DNA testing and it's confirmed that they are not related. Bridgette is depressed by this but everyone tells her that at least she's not related to that horrible human being of a father.
Warren and Bridgette start a game of cat and mouse with moments of running to each other and running away from each other. They share a physical bond oftentimes at night, only to be cold towards each other during the day. Warren wants to tell her how he really feels about her but he's so scared he would mess up what they have now. One day, Bridgette shares her childhood with him, that she was abandoned by her mother and molested by her uncle. Bridgette tells Warren she's never been loved. He is determined to change that.
Bridgette eventually tells Warren that she loves him. Phenomenal, romantic story with so many laugh out loud moments. This book works as a standalone as well - you don't have to know about any of the characters before going in. Loved this book.
