⭐ A Court of Wings and Ruin Review (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐): An Epic Finale That Had Me Completely Hooked
The first book made me curious.
The second book made me obsessed.
This one? It made me wonder why I ever claimed I wasn't a fantasy reader. 😂
A Court of Wings and Ruin takes everything the previous books have been building toward and delivers an epic, emotional, action-packed war that somehow balances political intrigue, romance, heartbreaking losses, and dragons... okay, not dragons, but enough magical creatures that I didn't even miss them.
Is it dramatic? Oh, absolutely.
Do people snarl a little too often? Also yes. By the beginning of the book, I was convinced every resident of Prythian needed anger management classes because someone was snarling every ten pages. 😆
But honestly? I didn't care.
The stakes are higher than ever, the twists feel earned, and unlike the previous book, this one doesn't completely rewrite who everyone is. Characters grow naturally, long-running storylines pay off, and the ending feels like the culmination of everything that's come before.
I couldn't put it down.

📖 Plot Summary of A Court of Wings and Ruin
🦊 Feyre Returns to the Spring Court
The novel picks up immediately after A Court of Mist and Fury.
Feyre has voluntarily returned to the Spring Court, pretending she's still loyal to Tamlin. In reality, she's spying for the Night Court, hoping to weaken both Tamlin's rule and his dangerous alliance with the King of Hybern before war breaks out.
This section was surprisingly one of my favorites.
Instead of relying on brute strength, Feyre uses intelligence, manipulation, and political strategy. She carefully exposes Ianthe's corruption, forces Tamlin into impossible situations, and gradually turns his own people against him. Every decision chips away at the Spring Court from the inside.
Eventually, Hybern's representatives arrive, confirming that war is only a matter of time. After discovering more of the king's plans, Feyre escapes with Lucien, who reluctantly leaves the Spring Court to reunite with Elain.
🌙 Preparing for War
Back in Velaris, everyone knows the countdown has begun.
Rhysand, Cassian, Azriel, Mor, Amren, and Feyre race to build alliances before Hybern attacks.
Meanwhile, Feyre's sisters continue struggling after being Made into High Fae.
Nesta lashes out at nearly everyone around her while refusing to process her trauma. Elain barely speaks, grieving both her lost humanity and the fiancé she was forced to leave behind. When she begins speaking in strange riddles, everyone assumes she's broken by grief—until they realize she's become a Seer, capable of glimpsing the future.
The group also recruits some unusual allies.
Feyre bargains with the ancient Bone Carver, makes another dangerous deal with the terrifying creature known as Bryaxis, and eventually agrees to retrieve the legendary Ouroboros Mirror, an artifact said to drive anyone who looks into it completely insane.
👑 The High Lords Unite
As Hybern launches attacks across Prythian, the Night Court desperately tries to convince the other High Lords to set aside centuries of conflict.
Their meeting is... chaotic.
Old grudges resurface.
Insults fly.
Tempers explode.
At one point I wasn't sure whether they were forming an alliance or starting a second war. 🍿
Then Tamlin arrives.
Instead of attacking everyone, he reveals he has secretly been acting as a double agent, feeding Hybern information while gathering intelligence for Prythian. Although no one fully forgives him—and he certainly doesn't forgive Feyre for dismantling the Spring Court—his information proves invaluable.
The fragile alliance is finally formed.
Just in time for Hybern to destroy the Wall separating humans and faeries.
The war has officially begun.
⚔️ The War for Prythian
The final third of the novel barely gives readers a chance to breathe.
Battles erupt across Prythian as Hybern steadily pushes forward despite repeated resistance. The allied armies manage several victories, but each one comes with devastating losses.
Along the way, another major surprise is revealed: Jurian has also been working as a double agent, pretending to serve Hybern while secretly protecting humanity.
Feyre seeks out the Suriel one final time, hoping for guidance. Instead, she witnesses one of the book's saddest moments as Ianthe mortally wounds the truth-telling faerie. Before dying, the Suriel gives Feyre one final piece of advice that helps shape the coming battle.
Not long afterward, Feyre gets her revenge by luring Ianthe directly into the Weaver's cottage, where the ancient death-god makes very short work of her.
Meanwhile, Feyre retrieves the Ouroboros Mirror. Rather than destroying her mind, it forces her to confront every beautiful, ugly, selfish, loving, cruel, and compassionate part of herself. By accepting every piece of who she is, she earns the Bone Carver's promise to fight beside them.
💔 The Final Battle & Ending
The climactic battle brings together every surviving force willing to stand against Hybern. The seven High Lords fight side by side, joined by unexpected allies including Vassa, Jurian, and—one of the book's biggest surprises—Feyre's father, who arrives with a fleet of human ships after secretly gathering support.
Even with reinforcements, Hybern's army proves nearly unstoppable. During the chaos, the King of Hybern murders Feyre and Nesta's father in front of them, leaving Nesta consumed by grief and rage.
As the fighting continues, Feyre and Amren race to reach the Cauldron. Amren finally reveals her true nature: she was never truly High Fae but an ancient being trapped inside a faerie body. Feyre releases her, allowing Amren's true form to unleash unimaginable power that obliterates much of Hybern's army. The effort destroys her body and leaves the Cauldron badly damaged.
At the same time, Elain quietly slips behind the King of Hybern and drives Truth-Teller through his neck. Before he can recover, Nesta finishes him by beheading him once and for all.
Although Hybern is defeated, the danger isn't over. The shattered Cauldron begins tearing apart the world's magic, forcing Feyre to use the combined powers gifted to her by all seven High Lords to repair it. Rhys pours all of his own magic into helping her, sacrificing his life in the process.
Just when it seems the victory has come at too high a cost, the seven High Lords repeat the miracle that once saved Feyre. Each contributes a spark of power, bringing Rhys back to life.
Amren also returns, reborn as High Fae rather than the ancient being she once was.
With the war finally over, humans and faeries begin negotiating a fragile peace. Tamlin is left alone to rebuild the shattered Spring Court and live with the consequences of his choices, while Feyre and Rhys return to Velaris, hopeful that after so much loss, they can finally begin building a better future.
💭 My Thoughts
This was easily my favorite book in the series so far.
While A Court of Mist and Fury focused heavily on romance and personal healing, A Court of Wings and Ruin expands into a true epic fantasy. The world feels larger, the politics become more complex, and the looming war gives every decision real weight.
I especially loved seeing Feyre fully step into her role as a leader. She's no longer simply reacting to events—she's making impossible decisions, building alliances, and carrying the fate of an entire world on her shoulders.
The action is nonstop, the emotional moments hit hard, and several long-running storylines pay off in incredibly satisfying ways.
Yes, Sarah J. Maas still loves the word snarl just a little too much. 😄 And I do think a couple of late-book resurrections softened the emotional impact of the ending.
But those are tiny complaints in a story this entertaining.
If you love high-stakes fantasy, found family, unforgettable characters, political intrigue, romance, and massive battles where you genuinely don't know who's making it out alive, this book absolutely delivers.
I already can't wait to keep reading this series.
