๐Ÿ’ญ My Honest Thoughts (aka… I played myself)

Let me set the scene.

I had just finished The Love Hypothesis and was fully ready to declare Ali Hazelwood my favorite author of all time. Bold. Confident. Public.

And then I picked up Bride.

…humbling.

This book was not for me. At all.

  • Chemistry? Missing. Gone. Never arrived.

  • Enemies-to-lovers? They were never enemies???

  • Pacing? Dragging me through each chapter like I owed it money

  • World-building? Required outside research mid-read

Also, I went in knowing absolutely nothing about omegaverse/knotting, which made parts of this feel like I accidentally opened the wrong genre and just… stayed there out of confusion.

That said—credit where it’s due:
๐Ÿ‘‰ The mystery plotline (Serena) was actually the most compelling part
๐Ÿ‘‰ Ana was easily the best character

Everything else? ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

๐Ÿ“š Overview

Bride is Ali Hazelwood’s first paranormal romance, following:

  • Misery Lark — a Vampyre used as political collateral

  • Lowe Moreland — Alpha of the Weres

To maintain peace, Misery is forced into marriage with Lowe.

But she has her own agenda:

๐Ÿ‘‰ She’s using the marriage to investigate the disappearance of her best friend, Serena.

๐Ÿงฉ Full Plot Summary (With Spoilers & Ending)

๐Ÿฉธ Forced Marriage… With a Hidden Motive

Misery agrees to marry Lowe as part of a political alliance between Vampyres and Weres.

But her real reason?

Before Serena disappeared, she left behind one cryptic clue:

๐Ÿ‘‰ “L.E. Moreland” (written in their private code)

Misery assumes the obvious:
๐Ÿ‘‰ Lowe Moreland

So if he’s involved—or knows something—this marriage gets her exactly where she needs to be.

๐Ÿบ Arrival at Were Territory

Things start off… tense:

  • Lowe reacts aggressively to her scent

  • The pack largely distrusts her

  • She’s treated like a threat

Except:
Ana (his younger sister) — immediately lovable
✨ A few neutral allies

There’s also:

  • An attack from a rogue Were (Max)

  • Misery saving Ana (important ๐Ÿ‘€)

  • Growing tension between species

๐Ÿ” The Serena Mystery (The Best Part of This Book, Honestly)

๐Ÿ•ต️‍♀️ Phase 1: Suspicion Falls on Lowe

Misery begins investigating immediately:

  • Searching Lowe’s office

  • Watching his behavior

  • Trying to access his computer

And to be fair, Lowe doesn’t exactly scream “trustworthy” at first:

  • Secretive

  • Emotionally distant

  • Weirdly reactive to her

So for a while, the theory holds:
๐Ÿ‘‰ He might be involved in Serena’s disappearance.

๐Ÿ’ก Phase 2: The Clue Cracks

Then Misery learns Ana’s full name:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Liliana Esther Moreland

And suddenly…

That original clue—“L.E. Moreland”—doesn’t point so cleanly to Lowe anymore.

Now there are two possibilities:

  • Lowe Moreland

  • Liliana Esther Moreland (Ana)

๐Ÿงฌ Phase 3: The Real Target

As Misery digs deeper:

  • Ana is revealed to be half Were / half Human

  • Her identity is being carefully protected

  • Hybrids are politically dangerous

Which reframes everything:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Serena wasn’t investigating Lowe.
๐Ÿ‘‰ She was investigating Ana—and what she represents.

☠️ Phase 4: What Happened to Serena

Eventually, the truth comes out:

  • Serena is alive

  • She was captured by the Vampyres

  • She is also half Were / half Human

And worse:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Misery’s father has been monitoring Serena for YEARS.

He placed her with Misery as a child to keep an eye on her, believing hybrids are dangerous.

So Serena’s investigation uncovered:

  • Ana’s identity

  • The truth about hybrids

  • And the corruption within Vampyre leadership

⚔️ Phase 5: The Final Showdown

Everything explodes:

  • Misery is kidnapped

  • Lowe is captured

  • Serena shifts into Were form

  • Owen helps turn the tables

Together, they take down Misery’s father and his operation.

Aftermath:
✔️ Serena is freed
✔️ The truth is exposed
✔️ The Collateral system is being dismantled

๐Ÿ’” The Romance (…yes, we have to talk about it)

Somewhere in all of this:

  • Lowe and Misery develop a biological bond through feeding

  • There’s marking, tension, and eventual sex

  • Lowe initially denies she’s his mate (cool cool cool ๐Ÿ™ƒ)

Eventually:
๐Ÿ‘‰ He admits she is his mate
๐Ÿ‘‰ They fully bond (yes… including knotting)
๐Ÿ‘‰ HEA achieved

Did I feel it?

No. Not even a little.

๐Ÿ˜ฌ Final Thoughts

This was such a strange reading experience.

Because structurally, the book actually has:
✔️ A solid mystery setup
✔️ A clear clue → misdirection → reveal pipeline
✔️ A strong political conflict

But the romance—the main point—just didn’t land.

And when a romance doesn’t romance… we have a problem.

Rating: 1.5 / 5

+0.5 for:

  • The Serena mystery (the real MVP)

  • Ana being the only consistently enjoyable character

๐Ÿ“– If You Want Something Better (IMO ๐Ÿ‘€)

If you liked the premise but want stronger execution:

  • The Fake Mate by Lana Ferguson

  • A Hunger Like No Other by Kresley Cole

  • Bride of the Shadow King by Sylvia Mercedes

  • Cold Hearted by Heather Guerre
