The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood

The Love Hypothesis Review ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Fake Dating, STEM Chaos & a Nerdy Dream Man

⚠️ Trigger Warnings

  • Sexual harassment / coercion

  • Power imbalance in academia

  • Grief (parental death from cancer)

  • Anxiety / panic around public speaking

๐Ÿ’• Why I’m Obsessed with This Book

Let me just say it: The Love Hypothesis was basically written for me.

And honestly, if you love Ali Hazelwood, you already know the vibe:
smart women in STEM + emotionally unavailable (but secretly obsessed) men + top-tier banter = magic.

What I loved most? This book is fully aware that it’s a rom-com. Olive literally calls out the tropes as they’re happening, and Adam—being the world’s most socially awkward, hyper-intelligent professor—is just standing there like:

“…what are you talking about?”

It’s incredible.

Also, as a former math major, I cannot explain how deeply I felt this chaotic gem of a quote:

“Virginity is not a continuous variable…”

I mean… statistics flirting?? Say less.

๐Ÿ˜‚ Relatable Content I Was Not Prepared For

Olive taking Adam to sushi on a first date and him not liking it??
Absolutely unacceptable.

I have personally reached the stage in life where:

  • If you don’t like sushi ๐Ÿšซ

  • You are simply not for me

Growth.

Ali Hazelwood just gets it. She writes men who check extremely specific, oddly niche boxes—and somehow makes you feel like she’s been spying on your dating preferences your entire life.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning — FULL Plot Breakdown Below

You’ve been warned. We are going ALL IN.

๐Ÿ“š Plot Summary (Full Spoilers & Ending Explained)

๐Ÿงช Meet Olive Smith: Scientist, Liar, Chaos Agent

Olive Smith is a 26-year-old PhD student at Stanford studying pancreatic cancer (๐Ÿ˜ญ because her mom died from it—yes, emotional damage right out of the gate).

Her love life? Nonexistent.
Her decision-making? Questionable at best.

In a moment of absolute desperation to convince her best friend Anh that she’s over her ex (so Anh can date him guilt-free), Olive does what any rational person would do:

๐Ÿ‘‰ She kisses a random man.

Unfortunately for her, that man is:
Adam Carlsen — infamous, terrifying, emotionally unavailable professor.

Oops.

๐Ÿง  Enter: Fake Dating (Because Of Course)

Adam demands an explanation (fair), and somehow they land on:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Fake dating for mutual benefit

  • Olive needs to convince her friend she’s moved on

  • Adam needs to appear “stable” so Stanford won’t pull his research funding

They agree to date for one month.

What follows:

  • Weekly fake coffee dates ☕

  • Increasingly real chemistry ๐Ÿ‘€

  • Olive internally screaming at all times

๐Ÿงฌ The Academic Stakes Get REAL

Olive is trying to secure a better lab to continue her cancer research.

Enter: Tom Benton (๐Ÿšฉ๐Ÿšฉ๐Ÿšฉ), a Harvard professor who offers her a potential position.

At first, it seems like a huge win:

  • He likes her research

  • He invites her to submit a report

  • He eventually offers her a spot in his lab

Everything is going great… until it very much is not.

๐Ÿจ The Conference Trip (aka Forced Proximity Excellence)

Olive and Adam attend a conference in Boston.

Key highlights:

  • They share a hotel room (hello trope ๐Ÿ‘€)

  • Adam helps Olive prep for her presentation ๐Ÿฅบ

  • Tension = THROUGH THE ROOF

But then—

After her panel, Tom corners Olive and:
๐Ÿ‘‰ Forces himself on her
๐Ÿ‘‰ Threatens her career when she resists
๐Ÿ‘‰ Calls her mediocre and talentless

This scene is awful and infuriating and way too real.

๐Ÿ’” The Fallout

Olive:

  • Doesn’t tell Adam it was Tom

  • Is emotionally wrecked

  • Sleeps with Adam that night (comfort + feelings finally boiling over)

But then—classic rom-com self-sabotage:
๐Ÿ‘‰ She breaks things off with Adam because she thinks it’s “for the best”

GIRL.

๐ŸŽค The Truth Comes Out

Olive accidentally recorded Tom’s entire disgusting rant.

Her friends (icons) convince her to:

  • Tell Adam the truth

  • Report Tom

Adam, being the absolute standard:
๐Ÿ‘‰ Supports her immediately
๐Ÿ‘‰ Helps ensure consequences happen

⚖️ Justice & The Ending

  • Tom is fired from Harvard ๐ŸŽ‰

  • Olive secures a new lab opportunity closer to Stanford

  • Adam and Olive reconcile (obviously, because they are EVERYTHING)

And in the most satisfying reveal:
๐Ÿ‘‰ Adam has been into Olive since before the fake dating even started

YES. WE LOVE A PINING MAN.

๐Ÿ’ญ Final Thoughts

This book is:

  • Funny ๐Ÿ˜‚

  • Smart ๐Ÿง

  • Romantic without being cheesy ๐Ÿ’•

  • And somehow both comforting and rage-inducing (looking at you, Tom)

Ali Hazelwood has mastered the formula:
๐Ÿ‘‰ emotionally unavailable man + chaotic genius woman + academic setting = perfection

Also, Adam Carlsen?
Top-tier book boyfriend. No notes.
