The Hunting Wives by May Cobb

🔫 THE HUNTING WIVES: Rich, Messy, and Deadly ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

I couldn’t put this one down. If you love stories about wealthy, messy families with skeletons in their closets, this is right up your alley. And the ending? 🤯 Let’s just say I should have seen it coming… Brad’s mom! How did I miss that?? Probably because I was reading so fast my brain short-circuited.

I also learned that this book has a Netflix adaptation, and for once, I’m actually curious to watch it — usually adaptations don’t tempt me.

🏡 Premise: Welcome to Mapleton, Texas

Sophie O’Neill moves to a quiet Texas town with her husband Graham and young son, hoping for a peaceful life. But boredom quickly sets in, and she reconnects with an old friend, Erin. Soon Sophie becomes obsessed with Margot Banks, a rich and glamorous local woman, via social media.

After meeting Margot at a charity fundraiser, Sophie is invited into the circle of affluent, wild women who host weekly shooting parties at Margot’s lake house. But these aren’t your typical weekend wine-and-cheese affairs… things quickly get dangerous, secretive, and sexual.

🔥 The Messy Secrets Unfold

  • Sophie discovers Margot is having a sexual relationship with Jill’s teenage son, Brad 😳

  • Margot has power over Sophie because she knows Sophie’s secret encounters with Jamie

  • Abby, Brad’s girlfriend, goes missing and is later found dead by shotgun near Margot’s property

  • Sophie’s fingerprints are found on the murder weapon, making her a prime suspect

  • Margot and Sophie’s tangled loyalties, plus the complex web of jealousy and desire, keep the suspense high

The tension ramps up with accusations, jealousy, and secrets, and you keep flipping pages wondering who will survive this rich-and-dangerous social web.

🧩 Full Spoiler: Who Did It

  • Sophie initially suspects Margot and Brad

  • She believes Margot may have coerced Abby into an abortion

  • After investigation, it turns out Jill, Brad’s obsessive mother, is the true killer

    • She murdered Abby over jealousy and the abortion dispute

    • Drowned Margot when she interfered
