The Inmate by Freida McFadden

🔒 The Inmate by Freida McFadden — Book Review (3.5/5 Stars)

Warning: Contains murder, betrayal, and family drama so tangled even a soap opera would say, “Whoa, chill.”

👩‍⚕️ Quick Take:

This book started out like a juicy Netflix drama — nurse Brooke working at a prison, ex named Shane behind bars for murder (and trying to off Brooke, too — rude), and a childhood BFF Tim who’s shady enough to make you double-check your friends list.

🤔 Who’s The Villain? Who’s The Hero? Heck, Who’s Even Real?

Classic McFadden: You think you’ve got it figured out, and then nope, she flips the script so hard you want to throw your Kindle across the room.

I tried my usual detective trick — “The good guy’s the bad guy and the bad guy’s the good guy.”

Spoiler alert: Shane really was the killer. And his mom Pamela? Jealous villain-extraordinaire. Like the worst soap mom ever.

💔 Family Drama That Makes You Say, “Yikes!”

Pamela was the ultimate grudge-holder — obsessed with Brooke’s dad, who promised to ditch his family for her but changed his mind. That’s some serious family drama that would make your group chat explode.

On murder night, Pamela and Shane wanted to take everyone out — except Tim — and frame him. Plan fails because Brooke’s a ninja and escapes.

😵 Whose Side Is Brooke On?

Shane tries to gaslight Brooke like a pro: “Tim did it!”

Tim’s now the assistant principal at Brooke’s kid’s school (of course he is, because of course), trying to warn Brooke Shane’s a psycho.

Brooke’s stuck in a confusing Who’s the real creep? episode, and honestly, so was I.

🔪 Climactic Mayhem: Son Stabs Dad, Mom Shoots Crazy Mom

Just when you think it’s safe to blink, Josh — Brooke’s kid — stabs Shane not knowing he’s his dad. That’s a parenting fail of epic proportions.

Brooke then shoots Pamela, because why not end on a bang? (Literally.)

🤦‍♀️ Plot Holes That Made Me Go, “Wait, What?”

  • Tim gifts Brooke a broken necklace. Is this a metaphor for their friendship or just sloppy gift-giving?

  • Tim’s sandalwood perfume and shady dating life? The book never explains. Maybe he moonlights as a fragrance model?

  • A few loose threads left me shaking my head harder than Brooke shaking off her exes.

📚 Who Should Read This?

If you like your thrillers messy, your family drama extra, and your plot twists with a side of “Wait, what just happened?”, grab this one. Just don’t expect perfect — think of it like fast food: satisfying, a little greasy, but you’ll keep coming back for more.

📚 If You Liked This, Try:

  • The Locked Door by Freida McFadden — for more family secrets and weirdly dysfunctional relationships

  • The Perfect Son by Freida McFadden — because sometimes your kid’s the real nightmare

  • Behind Closed Doors by B.A. Paris — if you want secrets and suspense without the extra plot holes
