📚 A Court of Silver Flames Review
After A Court of Frost and Starlight left me feeling decidedly underwhelmed, I desperately needed this series to drag me back into Prythian.
And OH BOY DID IT.
I absolutely loved A Court of Silver Flames. 🔥🔥🔥
Is the plot as action-packed as A Court of Wings and Ruin? No. Are parts of Nesta's training and emotional journey repetitive? Definitely. Did I occasionally want to grab Nesta by the shoulders and yell, "GIRL. PLEASE."?
Absolutely.
Did any of that stop me from devouring 700+ pages of Nesta and Cassian verbally sparring, physically sparring, emotionally destroying each other, and eventually falling hopelessly in love?
Not even slightly. 😂
At its heart, A Court of Silver Flames is much more of a character-driven story than the previous ACOTAR books. Instead of another giant war dominating the plot, we're watching Nesta crawl out of one of the darkest periods of her life while Cassian somehow manages to challenge her without abandoning her.
And their dynamic???
A sharp-tongued, stubborn, strong-willed FMC 🤝🏻 a cocky, flirtatious warrior MMC who would ultimately move mountains if it made the woman he loved smile.
YES PLEASE.
Their relationship is chaotic, frustrating, ridiculously horny, unexpectedly tender, and exactly the kind of mess I apparently enjoy reading about.
🦇 A Moment of Appreciation for Bat Daddy Cassian
Okay.
SIRRRRRR. 👀
If anybody needs me, I'll be screaming, crying, barking and drooling over this Illyrian warrior for the foreseeable future. 🙌🏻😍
There is just something about the cocky warrior who could probably crush someone with one hand but is secretly a giant emotional marshmallow that gets me every single time.
Cassian is funny. He's arrogant. He's ridiculously flirtatious. He's loyal almost to a fault. And underneath all that swagger is someone carrying his own insecurities about where he came from and whether he's actually worthy of the people he loves.
Unfortunately for me, this combination is apparently irresistible.
Not to be dramatic, but Cassian will forever have me in a chokehold.
And unfortunately, I do not mean literally.
I genuinely think Cassian might now be my favorite character in the entire ACOTAR series.
YES, I KNOW.
I said that about Rhysand.
And, um...
I also said something similar about Tamlin when I read A Court of Thorns and Roses.
We don't need to discuss that. That was a different time. I was younger. I didn't know things. 😂
If Rhys and Cassian battled for first place in my completely imaginary ranking, Rhysie would put up a respectable fight...
But Cassian is taking home the trophy. 🏆
(Sidenote: I still think Tamlin deserves a happily ever after. Judge me. 🤷🏻♀️😂)
🗡️ Nesta Archeron: The Redemption Arc I Wasn't Sure I Wanted
And then there's Nesta.
Oh, Nesta.
Up through the end of A Court of Wings and Ruin, I found her unbelievably irritating and, quite frankly, insufferable.
After Silver Flames?
I've warmed to her considerably.
Now I only find her irritating and insufferable occasionally. 😂
Progress!
This book finally lets us inside Nesta's head, and suddenly so much of her behavior makes more sense. She's carrying an enormous amount of grief, guilt, anger and self-hatred, and she's basically decided that if she can make everyone hate her, they'll eventually leave—and then she won't have to confront the terrifying possibility that she might actually deserve their love.
It's heartbreaking.
But here's where I still struggle with her.
Understanding why someone behaves badly doesn't automatically erase the damage they've caused.
Nesta was consistently cruel to Feyre, even before the Cauldron, the war and everything that followed. And I still cannot completely get past the fact that she allowed her youngest sister to go into the woods and risk her life to keep the family alive.
As an eldest sister, that is SO HARD for me to swallow.
You can bet your ass I'd be sacrificing myself before letting my younger sister repeatedly march into a dangerous forest because everybody else decided she was apparently the family DoorDash driver.
So while I understand Nesta much better now, I'm not quite ready to join the Nesta Has Never Done Anything Wrong In Her Life fan club.
But her growth in this book?
Fantastic.
By the end, I was dangerously close to crying. 🥹
⚔️ The Valkyries Were EVERYTHING
One of my absolute favorite parts of A Court of Silver Flames wasn't even the romance.
It was Nesta, Gwyn and Emerie.
😭❤️
Watching these three women slowly become friends was genuinely one of the sweetest parts of the entire series.
They don't magically heal each other. They train together, laugh together, share books, confront their fears, support each other and gradually create this beautiful little found family.
And when they decide to resurrect the Valkyries?
HELL YES.
Their friendship gave Nesta something she'd desperately needed: relationships that weren't tangled up in her history with Feyre and Elain.
Gwyn and Emerie get to know Nesta as Nesta.
Not Nesta the difficult sister.
Not Nesta the Cauldron-made Fae.
Not Nesta the woman everyone is trying to fix.
Just Nesta.
And I desperately need more of Gwyn and Emerie in future books.
Also, Nesta's love of smutty romance novels absolutely sent me. 😂🔥

📖 A Court of Silver Flames Plot Summary — Full Spoilers
Nesta Hits Rock Bottom
A Court of Silver Flames begins after the war with Hybern, and Nesta Archeron is falling apart.
After being forcibly Made into High Fae by the Cauldron, watching her father die, killing the King of Hybern and surviving the war, Nesta has become consumed by guilt and self-loathing. Rather than dealing with any of it, she isolates herself from Feyre, Elain and the Inner Circle and spends her nights drinking, gambling and sleeping with strangers.
Eventually, Feyre and the others intervene.
Nesta is given a choice: return to the human lands or move into the House of Wind, work in its library and train every morning with Cassian.
Since the House sits atop an enormous mountain and leaving on foot requires descending 10,000 stairs, Nesta quickly realizes her freedom has become rather... theoretical.
She is FURIOUS.
Cassian, naturally, is thrilled to be assigned to the woman who has spent years verbally eviscerating him.
What could possibly go wrong? 😂
Nesta Begins Training With Cassian
At first, Nesta refuses to cooperate. She barely eats, hates training and repeatedly attempts to descend the House's stairs, only to discover exactly how horrifying 10,000 steps actually are.
But slowly, Cassian breaks through her defenses.
Nesta begins training seriously and starts rebuilding both her physical strength and her confidence.
Meanwhile, she works in the library beneath the House of Wind, where she meets Gwyn, a priestess who survived a horrific attack during the war. Nesta also befriends Emerie, an Illyrian shopkeeper whose wings were mutilated to prevent her from flying.
Together, the three women begin training.
Inspired by the legendary female warriors known as the Valkyries, Nesta, Gwyn and Emerie decide to revive their techniques, combining physical training with mental exercises designed to calm and focus the mind.
And slowly, Nesta begins creating a life that she actually wants to live.
Nesta's Powers and the Dread Trove
Unfortunately, Nesta didn't just emerge from the Cauldron as High Fae.
She took something from it.
Her terrifying powers are connected to death itself, and the Inner Circle soon needs her abilities to locate magical objects known as the Dread Trove.
The Trove consists of ancient artifacts of enormous power, including the Mask, which can control the dead; the Harp, which can open doors through space and time; and the Crown, which can control minds.
Nesta successfully locates the Mask and the Harp, but the Crown has already fallen into dangerous hands.
The human queen Briallyn, who was transformed into an ancient crone by the Cauldron, has allied herself with the mysterious sorcerer Koschei and is seeking revenge against Nesta.
At the same time, Cassian and Nesta's attraction has finally become impossible to ignore.
Their relationship initially remains physical because both of them are spectacularly talented at having feelings while pretending they absolutely do not have feelings.
But Cassian has known for some time what Nesta refuses to acknowledge:
They are mates.
Nesta, Gwyn and Emerie Enter the Blood Rite
Nesta's transformation reaches its biggest test when she, Gwyn and Emerie are kidnapped and dumped into the Illyrian Blood Rite.
The Rite is traditionally reserved for Illyrian males, who are dropped into the wilderness without their magic and forced to survive while fighting their way toward the sacred mountain Ramiel.
The women have been thrown into it deliberately.
Instead of breaking apart, the three Valkyries use everything they've learned.
They fight.
They survive.
They protect one another.
And they prove that they belong there just as much as any Illyrian male.
When Emerie is injured, Nesta and Gwyn refuse to abandon her. Eventually Gwyn and Emerie reach the top of Ramiel, making them Carynthian, an achievement accomplished by only a tiny number of warriors in Illyrian history.
Nesta, however, stays behind.
Briallyn appears and uses the Crown to control Cassian, ordering him to kill Nesta.
But Nesta finally accepts the mating bond between herself and Cassian. Cassian manages to resist Briallyn's control long enough for Nesta to turn the tables, and Nesta kills Briallyn, ending the queen's threat.
Feyre's Pregnancy and Nesta's Final Sacrifice
But Nesta's greatest battle isn't the Blood Rite.
Throughout the book, Feyre has been pregnant with Rhysand's child.
The baby has Illyrian wings, creating an enormous problem: Feyre's High Fae body isn't built to safely deliver a winged baby, and shifting into Illyrian form during pregnancy could endanger the child.
When Feyre goes into labor, everything goes catastrophically wrong.
She begins dying.
The baby is dying.
And because of the bargain connecting Feyre and Rhysand's lives, Rhys is dying too.
Nesta arrives to find her sister bleeding to death and realizes there is only one thing she can do.
She reaches for the power she stole from the Cauldron and gives it back, surrendering almost all of her immense magic in exchange for saving Feyre, Rhys and their newborn son, Nyx.
In doing so, Nesta finally does what she's spent the entire book believing she's incapable of doing:
She chooses love over fear.
The Mother allows Nesta to retain a small portion of her power and magically alters both Nesta and Feyre's bodies so they can safely bear winged children in the future.
Nesta and Feyre finally begin repairing their fractured relationship, and Nesta accepts what she has spent so long trying to push away:
Her family.
Her friends.
Cassian.
And herself.
By the end, Nesta and Cassian openly accept their mating bond, Nesta celebrates with the people she loves, and the woman who began the book convinced she deserved nothing finally allows herself to believe that she deserves a future.

❤️ Nesta and Cassian's Romance Completely Won Me Over
For all the magic, politics, magical artifacts and impending threats, this book ultimately belongs to Nesta and Cassian.
And I loved them.
Their relationship isn't soft and easy. They challenge each other constantly. They hurt each other. They misunderstand each other. They are both spectacularly stubborn.
But Cassian sees Nesta at her absolute worst and still believes there's someone underneath all that anger worth fighting for.
More importantly, he doesn't rescue her.
Nesta rescues herself.
Cassian simply refuses to stop believing she can.
And THAT is what made their relationship work for me.
Also, yes, there is a truly absurd amount of sex in this book. 😂
Apparently Sarah J. Maas looked at A Court of Frost and Starlight and said, "You know what this series needs? More."
And then proceeded accordingly.

⭐ Final Thoughts on A Court of Silver Flames
5/5 stars.
I LOVED THIS.
It's not perfect. The pacing is slower than the previous full-length books, some of Nesta's training and internal struggles become repetitive, and I still have complicated feelings about how easily some readers forgive her treatment of Feyre.
But none of that outweighed how much I loved Nesta's transformation, the Valkyries, the female friendships, the emotional payoff and—obviously—Cassian.
Nesta's journey from a woman deliberately destroying herself to someone capable of accepting friendship, love and forgiveness was genuinely moving.
And the ending?

I was so much more emotionally invested than I expected to be.
Most importantly, this book gave me Gwyn and Emerie, resurrected the Valkyries, made me genuinely care about Nesta...
...and officially promoted Bat Daddy Cassian to the top of my ACOTAR man rankings.
Rhysie, I'm sorry.
You had a good run. 🫡

Bottom line: Come for Nesta's redemption arc. Stay for the Valkyries. Lose whatever dignity you had left over Cassian. 🦇🔥
