Caught Up by Navessa Allen

Caught Up by Navessa Allen Review ⭐⭐⭐⭐ — Mafia Men, Masked Kinks & Absolutely Zero Chill

If you came to Caught Up looking for a deep, intricate plot with shocking twists and emotional complexity… this may not fully deliver.

If you came for dark romance, obsessive men, BDSM, voyeurism/exhibitionism, and enough sexual tension to fog up your Kindle screen? Oh, this book absolutely understood the assignment ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ”ฅ

The second book in the Into Darkness series is chaotic, horny, dramatic, occasionally ridiculous, and honestly? I had a blast.

๐Ÿ“š About Caught Up by Navessa Allen

Caught Up follows Junior Trocci, a mafia golden boy who has been obsessively in love with his high school ex, Lauren Marchetti, for literally ten years. Meanwhile Lauren has built a successful career as a cam girl and sex worker while advocating for better protections and rights for sex workers in her city.

The issue?
Junior completely betrayed her in high school and left her to deal with horrific bullying alone. So while the chemistry between them is immediate, Lauren understandably wants to tase him on sight.

(And honestly? She does that more than once ๐Ÿ’€)

This book mixes:

  • dark romance

  • mafia drama

  • second chance romance

  • sex-positive themes

  • and approximately 14,000 scenes of these two trying not to climb each other like trees.

๐Ÿšจ SPOILER WARNING ๐Ÿšจ

From this point on, I’m discussing the FULL plot and ending of the book!

๐Ÿ–ค Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

The book opens with Junior and his brothers casually dumping a body into a river because apparently this family treats homicide like a group bonding activity ๐Ÿฅฐ

Right away we learn Junior has NEVER gotten over Lauren. Like… not even a little bit. He has secretly subscribed to Lauren’s camming account for TEN YEARS under the username NT95 and watches all her content while pining dramatically in mafia silence.

Is it romantic?
Is it concerning?
The answer is unfortunately yes.

Lauren, meanwhile, knows her career makes people judge her constantly, but she’s fiercely independent and deeply passionate about advocating for sex workers. She’s also part owner of a sex club called Velvet, which becomes a huge part of the story.

When Junior and Lauren reunite at church, the tension is immediate. Junior corners her in a hallway because apparently mafia men do not believe in normal conversation starters. Lauren is furious with him because back in high school, when their relationship was exposed, Junior publicly denied knowing her at all. The fallout destroyed her socially and forced her to switch schools.

So yes, she still wants revenge.
But she also still wants him.
Classic dark romance problems ๐Ÿ˜ญ

The relationship quickly becomes intensely sexual. Junior secretly tracks Lauren to Velvet wearing a mask, and the book leans HARD into the voyeurism/exhibitionism elements from there. There are multiple scenes involving public sexual encounters, club performances, BDSM dynamics, and power play.

This is VERY much a “plot who?” kind of book.

And honestly? I knew that going in. Navessa Allen clearly prioritized the kinky dynamics and chemistry over complicated storytelling. If that works for you, you’ll probably eat this up.

One thing I genuinely appreciated was how unapologetically sex-positive the story is. Lauren is never shamed by the narrative for doing sex work, and the book actively discusses safety, empowerment, and autonomy within those spaces. That aspect felt refreshing compared to romances that flirt with taboo topics but then suddenly get weirdly judgmental about them halfway through.

Junior eventually reveals he has secretly been protecting Lauren for years. Back in high school, after Lauren was bullied, he framed the girl responsible by planting drugs in her locker and house. Which is… objectively insane behavior. But in dark romance language, this apparently translates to “he cared deeply” ๐Ÿ˜ญ

Their relationship keeps imploding because Junior cannot stop acting like a mafia man first and a functioning communicator second.

Meanwhile, Velvet is struggling financially because rent keeps increasing. Junior ends up trying to help by using mafia connections to essentially secure ownership of the building for Lauren and the club.

Things fully explode when Lauren hears Junior may have killed her father, Tommy. She storms into his apartment and literally tases him. Their relationship collapses for several days until Junior finally explains the truth: Tommy is actually alive and hiding in Italy under mafia protection.

Once Lauren learns Junior wasn’t lying about that, they reconcile.

The ending involves one of the most dysfunctional family dinners imaginable. Junior tells his father he wants out of the mafia, and his dad responds by ATTACKING HIM AT THE TABLE like this is Thanksgiving in hell ๐Ÿ˜ญ

Lauren then tases Junior’s father too, which honestly made her my favorite character.

By the end:

  • Junior successfully begins distancing himself from mafia life

  • Lauren and Junior fully commit to each other

  • Velvet thrives under new ownership

  • the two of them even start performing at the club together

  • and the book closes with them surrounded by their chosen family and finally building a future together

Which is honestly kind of sweet beneath all the chaos, violence, and aggressively public sex.

๐Ÿ’ญ My Thoughts on Caught Up

This book was FUN. Messy, horny, ridiculous fun.

I think your enjoyment of Caught Up will depend entirely on what you’re looking for:

  • If you want a strong, layered plot → you may be disappointed.

  • If you want chemistry, taboo themes, dark humor, and nonstop spice → welcome home ๐Ÿ˜‚

The biggest weakness for me was definitely the storyline. There IS technically a mafia plot happening in the background, but it mostly feels like connective tissue between sexual encounters. I never felt deeply invested in the external conflicts because the book’s true focus is clearly the relationship dynamics and kinky exploration.

That said, I really respected how openly this book explored sexuality. The BDSM and exhibitionist elements weren’t treated like cheap shock value. The book fully embraces those themes instead of awkwardly apologizing for them.

Also:
Junior is completely unhinged.
This man said “healthy coping mechanisms” and chose stalking instead ๐Ÿ˜ญ

But somehow the chemistry still worked for me.

⭐ Final Rating: 4 Stars

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

Not the strongest plot-driven romance I’ve read, but absolutely entertaining from beginning to end. If you enjoy:

  • dark romance

  • obsessive morally gray men

  • taboo sexual themes

  • sex-positive storytelling

  • second chance romance

  • and mafia men making catastrophically bad decisions…

you’ll probably have a great time with this one.
