๐ Overview
Mother-Daughter Murder Night (2023) by Nina Simon is a cozy-meets-crime novel that blends family drama, murder mystery, and a surprising amount of humor—all wrapped up in a three-generation female powerhouse story ๐ฅ
Set in the marshy beauty of Monterey Bay, this one leans heavily into:
Mother-daughter tension
Strong women navigating messy lives
Amateur sleuthing with a side of sass
And yes… it was a Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick and a New York Times bestseller, so expectations were high going in.
๐ญ My Thoughts (Honest & Unfiltered)
Okay, here’s the deal…
This book is GOOD. Like, genuinely enjoyable. But also? It takes its sweet time getting to the actual murder mystery ๐
By the time things really kicked off, I was already halfway into “wait… what are we doing here again?” mode.
That said…
Once the mystery gets going? ๐
I was back in. Fully invested.
And honestly, the real magic of this book isn’t the murder—it’s the three generations of women:
Lana (the no-nonsense grandmother)
Beth (the emotionally scarred middle)
Jack (our messy, lovable Gen Z queen)
Their dynamic is:
messy ✔️
funny ✔️
frustrating ✔️
heartwarming ✔️
It’s giving:
“We may fight constantly, but we WILL solve a murder together.”
Also… the author’s note? ๐ฅบ
She wrote this while her own mother was battling cancer—and they shared the manuscript together.
That alone added a whole emotional layer that really stuck with me:
“a fierce little hug in the wilderness”
Like… excuse me while I tear up a little.
๐ Full Plot Summary (Spoilers Included)
The story takes place in Elkhorn Slough, a quiet coastal community in California.
๐ Opening Scene (Yes, It’s Weird)
Beth and her daughter Jack are literally burying a dead seal using a fancy tablecloth from Beth’s mother, Lana.
Normal behavior. Totally.
This sets the tone:
✨ quirky
✨ slightly chaotic
✨ not your typical mystery
๐ง Enter Lana (aka The Boss)
Lana is a high-powered, emotionally distant businesswoman who:
falls in her kitchen
gets diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer
immediately starts managing the situation like a corporate crisis
She moves in with Beth and Jack, and WOW—
the tension between Lana and Beth is thick.
Why?
Because:
Beth got pregnant young
Lana pushed for an abortion
Beth refused and left
Lana “helped”… but emotionally? ๐ซ
So now we’ve got:
๐ unresolved resentment
๐ forced proximity
๐ a terminal diagnosis
What could go wrong?
๐จ The Murder
Jack, who runs kayak tours, discovers a dead body in the marsh—Ricardo Cruz.
And guess what?
He was supposed to be on her tour the night before.
So naturally… ๐ she becomes a suspect.
Eventually, the timeline clears her, but Lana?
She’s hooked.
Retirement plan = solve a murder ๐
๐งฉ The Second Death
An elderly man, Hal Rhoads, dies around the same time.
Initially ruled natural causes… BUT:
He was connected to Ricardo
They were working on a land deal
Multiple people want that land
๐จ Suspicion level: rising
๐ต️♀️ Amateur Sleuth Squad Activated
The trio splits up:
Lana investigates Diana (Hal’s daughter)
Beth investigates Martin (Hal’s son)
Lana becomes VERY suspicious of Victor (land trust guy)
Things escalate when:
๐ฅ Lana gets trapped in Victor’s office during a fire (possibly arson)
๐ฅ Important documents are destroyed
At this point, it’s giving:
everyone is shady, trust no one
๐ฅ The Big Reveal (AND Ending)
All suspects gather at the Rhoads property (classic ๐)
And the killer is…
๐ MARTIN (the son)
Motivation?
Not land.
Not money.
Jealousy.
He was furious that:
Ricardo and Hal were working together
He felt excluded and overshadowed
So he:
killed Ricardo
killed Hal
planned to kill everyone else and stage an explosion
Because obviously that’s a logical escalation ๐ฌ
๐ฆธ♀️ Final Showdown
Just as things go full chaos…
๐ฅ Jack knocks him out
๐ Detective Ramirez arrives
๐ฎ♂️ Arrest made
Case closed!
๐ Resolution
Lana and Beth FINALLY begin to heal their relationship
Lana chooses less aggressive cancer treatment
She moves out… but stays nearby
Starts a new business (because of course she does)
And Jack?
Still chaotic. Still lovable. Still kayaking ๐ถ
✨ What Worked for Me
✔️ Three-generation female dynamic (this carried the book HARD)
✔️ Humor in dark moments ๐
✔️ Lana’s character = ICON
✔️ Emotional depth from the cancer storyline
✔️ Satisfying, clean ending
๐ฌ What Didn’t
❌ Slow start (like… very slow)
❌ Mystery takes a backseat for a while
❌ By the time it ramps up, I had to mentally re-engage
๐ Final Verdict
This is one of those books where:
You come for the murder mystery
You stay for the family drama
If you’re expecting a fast-paced thriller?
This ain’t it.
But if you love:
๐ messy family dynamics
๐ strong women
๐ cozy mystery vibes with depth
You’ll have a really good time.
