๐ Overview
Forget Me Not by Stacy Willingham is a Southern gothic mystery thriller that follows journalist Claire Campbell as she revisits her hometown to uncover the truth behind her sister Natalie’s murder 22 years earlier.
What starts as a grief-driven investigation quickly spirals into something much darker—think vineyard cult vibes, hidden identities, and a diary that basically screams “do NOT trust this man.”
✨ What Worked for Me
๐ The Diaries = Elite Content
I was LOCKED IN anytime Claire was reading Marcia’s diary.
There’s something about:
Past timeline creeping into present
Watching someone slowly realize they’re in danger
That inevitable “oh no… oh NO…” feeling
Seriously, this was the strongest part of the book.
๐ A True Page-Turner
I genuinely wanted to know:
๐ What actually happened to Natalie?
๐ Who is Mitchell REALLY?
๐ Why is everyone at this vineyard acting… off?
It’s one of those books where you keep saying, “just one more chapter” and suddenly it’s midnight and you’re dehydrated.
๐ฌ What Didn’t Work (aka… my issues)
๐ The Ending Felt… Very Been-There-Done-That
This is where it lost me.
The big reveal leans HARD into:
Cult leader manipulation
Vulnerable girls being pulled into a “family”
Isolation, control, drugs, coercion
And honestly? It felt very reminiscent of Charles Manson and his whole situation.
Nothing about it felt particularly new or inventive. I kept thinking:
“I’ve seen this exact story before… multiple times.”
๐ค Real-Life Parallels That Pulled Me Out
The whole dynamic also gave strong echoes of the Elizabeth Smart abduction — especially with the manipulation, control, and disturbing “family” structure.
And yes—you’re right—that case involved Brian David Mitchell, which made the name choice here feel… a little too on-the-nose.
๐ง Full Plot Summary (Spoilers Ahead ๐จ)
Claire Campbell returns home after her mother is injured and quickly becomes re-obsessed with her sister Natalie’s murder.
She discovers:
Old photos of Natalie at Galloway Farm
A mysterious vineyard run by Mitchell Galloway
A hidden diary written by a girl named Marcia
๐ The Diary Timeline
Through Marcia’s diary, we learn:
She was groomed by Mitchell as a teenager
He convinced her to join his off-grid “family” living on the farm
The group survives by stealing, doing drugs, and isolating themselves
Other girls (Lily, Annie, Montana) are part of this disturbing commune
๐ฉ Major red flags:
Mitchell manipulates vulnerable girls
Encourages dependency
Controls their reality
Eventually:
Marcia realizes she’s in danger
She tries to escape
She’s pregnant with Mitchell’s child
But before she can leave…
๐ She is poisoned and killed by Lily
๐ณ Present-Day Chaos
Claire digs deeper and discovers:
Mitchell is likely behind multiple disappearances
His wife “Marcia” is actually Lily impersonating her ๐ณ
The real Marcia is long dead
And THEN—plot twist:
๐ Liam (the sweet vineyard manager) is actually Mitchell’s son
๐ He knows way more than he’s letting on
๐ And yes… he locks Claire up ๐ฌ
๐ The Truth About Natalie
Brace yourself:
Natalie discovered the truth years ago
She tried to expose Mitchell
A corrupt cop (formerly part of the cult ๐) brought her BACK to him
Lily poisoned Natalie
So yeah. Absolutely horrifying.
๐ช The Final Showdown
Claire:
Escapes captivity
Stabs Mitchell in the neck (honestly… deserved)
Convinces Liam not to continue the cycle
Lily is arrested
Bodies are found under the shed (!!!)
The corrupt cop is exposed
Liam is spared due to his age at the time
๐ฐ Ending
Claire writes a huge exposรฉ
Natalie finally gets justice
Claire reconciles with her mother
Moves back to NYC with Ryan
Clean ending… but emotionally? I wanted something more original.
⚖️ Final Thoughts
This book had:
✔️ Strong pacing
✔️ Addictive diary sections
✔️ A genuinely intriguing mystery
But…
❌ The resolution felt predictable
❌ Heavy reliance on familiar cult tropes
❌ Lacked that “wow, I’ve never seen this before” factor
⭐ Rating: 2.5/5
A solid page-turner while reading… but ultimately forgettable once you step back.
