π My Thoughts
This book was beautifully written, heart-wrenching, and slow-burning — in a good way. The pacing can drag at times, but honestly, it worked here. The alternating timelines between the 1920s and the 1990s are executed so smoothly that you can’t help but keep turning pages to see how everything connects.
That said — Ugh! I have to vent: it drives me crazy when characters refuse to read letters from their parents. Like, seriously, why?! Even if your mom is in prison for murder — read the first letter at least! π In this story, Izzy avoids her mother’s letters for years, believing that if she reads them, she’ll “turn out just like her mom.” Girl, no. That’s not how it works. Thankfully she does read them in the end… but of course, it’s too late. I was frustrated but emotional — which means the author did her job!
Overall: 4 out of 5 stars. It’s haunting, layered, and deeply emotional. If you love books that balance mystery, historical fiction, and raw human pain, this one’s for you.
π Spoiler Summary
(Full plot details below — proceed with caution! π¨)
The story alternates between two perspectives:
π―️ Clara (1929–1946)
Clara is a young socialite who dares to fall in love with Bruno, an Italian immigrant. Her wealthy father disowns her for this, declaring her insane and locking her away in an asylum when she refuses an arranged marriage. From there, Clara’s life spirals into a nightmare.
She’s subjected to horrific abuse at Willard State Psychiatric Hospital — ice baths, isolation, and forced drug treatments. Her pregnancy makes things worse: she gives birth to a daughter, only to have her stolen by a corrupt doctor who raises the child as his own. Her one true love, Bruno, ends up imprisoned at Willard as well after trying to rescue her. Their escape plan fails — tragically. Bruno dies, and Clara spends decades institutionalized, her letters unread, her truth buried in a suitcase.
π Izzy (1995)
Izzy is a foster teen with a dark past — her mother, Joyce, is in prison for killing her father. Izzy helps her foster mom, Peg, catalog abandoned patient suitcases from Willard and finds Clara’s. As she reads the letters and journals, Izzy becomes obsessed with learning Clara’s story.
Meanwhile, Izzy’s bullied at school, especially by Shannon — a mean girl who crosses the line in every possible way. The bullying subplot is brutal but realistic. Through it all, Izzy finds friendship (and romance) with Ethan, who treats her with kindness and helps her see her own worth.
As Izzy uncovers more about Clara’s life, she’s forced to confront her own trauma. Her mother’s letters — which she’s ignored for years — reveal the truth: Izzy’s father had been abusing her, and her mother killed him to protect her. It’s a devastating revelation that reframes everything.
In the end, Izzy finally reads every letter, visits her dying mother to say goodbye, and finds closure. She also reunites Clara (now elderly) with her long-lost daughter, Susan. Peg and her husband officially adopt Izzy, giving her the family she’s always needed. The final scene — a birthday celebration full of love and second chances — left me teary-eyed. π️
