😲 First Impressions

Wow. Just… wow. Alice Feeney has never failed me yet. I’ve read Daisy Darker and Rock Paper Scissors, and both had me hooked. And now? His & Hers has officially cemented her as one of my favorite thriller writers.

Can I give this one 10 out of 5 stars? ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Okay, real talk: I wasn’t shocked by the twist because it reminded me of Just the Nicest Couple by Mary Kubica. But honestly? I didn’t even care. The storytelling, the atmosphere, the tension you could practically slice with a knife 🔪— it was all so well done. Alice Feeney is a master at creating flawed, complex characters that you somehow root for and side-eye at the same time.

🚨 Spoiler-Filled Plot Summary (You’ve Been Warned!)

The book alternates between three POVs:

  • Anna Andrews → a BBC reporter

  • Jack Harper → Anna’s ex-husband, a police inspector

  • The Killer → anonymous, until the very end 😱

Anna is sent back to her hometown of Blackdown to report on a murder. Big problem? She HATES Blackdown—it’s full of painful memories, including losing her baby and surviving some very dark teenage experiences.

The victim? Rachel, a former friend and high school mean girl who also happens to have been with Jack the night before she died. Oops. (Yeah, he leaves that detail out. Bad move, Jack. 🚩)

Pretty soon, more bodies start dropping: women from Anna’s past—Rachel, Helen, Zoe—all killed, all found with creepy friendship bracelets shoved in their mouths.

Through flashbacks, we learn that Anna, Rachel, Zoe, and Helen were all tangled up in a horrific night as teens—groomed, assaulted, and traumatized. One girl, Catherine (Cat), was the most victimized that night. And guess what? She’s back in the picture now as Anna’s BBC colleague.

Things spiral. There are betrayals, affairs, and a lot of finger-pointing. The tension is so high you’ll be tempted to yell at the pages like it’s a horror movie: “Don’t go into the woods, Anna!!” 🌲😬

The big reveal? Well, buckle up:

  • Cat was not the killer (though she definitely had her revenge plot in motion).

  • The real killer is… Anna’s mother. Yep. Mrs. Andrews, who everyone thought was a sweet little lady with dementia, was actually faking it. 🤯

She had read Anna’s old suicide note, saw how broken her daughter was, and decided to take matters into her own hands. She murdered Anna’s former friends one by one, framing others (including Cat) along the way.

The cherry on top? She even tried to manipulate events so that Anna and Jack (divorced and messy as they are) would find their way back together. Talk about mom meddling to the extreme. 🫠

By the end:

  • Cat dies (for real this time).

  • Jack and Anna reunite, now raising his orphaned niece Olivia.

  • Anna gets her BBC job back.

  • Mrs. Andrews walks away seemingly unsuspected, already eyeing her next victim. (Chilling, right?)

💭 Final Thoughts

This book is dark, twisty, and addictive. Even though I spotted some of the turns, I devoured it because Alice Feeney knows exactly how to layer her stories: alternating perspectives, unreliable narrators, and just enough emotional gut-punches to keep you glued.

The ending? Creepy, haunting, and satisfying in that "I need to sleep with the lights on" way.
