Caraval by Stephanie Garber

๐ŸŽญ Caraval Review ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | The Fantasy Game I Didn’t Know I Needed (But Now I’m Obsessed)

Okay WOW. This one completely surprised me in the best way possible. ๐Ÿคฏ✨
I went in expecting “meh, fantasy isn’t really my thing,” and came out like… excuse me while I immediately pick up book two.

And YES — it absolutely gave me vibes of The Game ๐ŸŽฌ.
If you know, you know. That whole “what’s real vs. what’s part of the game???” psychological spiral? Yeah. That energy is ALL over this book—and I loved every second of it.

Quick Thoughts

  • Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5 stars)

  • Readability: Super easy, fast-paced, addictive

  • Vibe: Magical chaos + emotional damage + romance

  • Me, a non-fantasy reader: …now apparently reading fantasy?? Who am I?? ๐Ÿ˜…

๐ŸŽช What Is Caraval About? (Spoiler-Free-ish Setup)

Caraval by Stephanie Garber is basically a magical, immersive game where nothing is quite what it seems.

Think:

  • ๐ŸŽญ Interactive theater

  • ๐Ÿงฉ Puzzle hunt

  • ๐Ÿ’” Emotional manipulation

  • ๐ŸŽฒ And a whole lot of “WAIT… WAS THAT REAL???”

๐Ÿงต Full Plot Summary (With ALL the Spoilers)

Let’s break this down clearly because this plot gets twisty FAST.

๐Ÿ‘ญ Sisters, Trauma, and Escape Plans

Scarlett Dragna has spent her whole life dreaming of Caraval—a magical experience run by the mysterious Legend. But she’s stuck on an island with her abusive, controlling father, Governor Dragna ๐Ÿ˜ก.

Her plan? Survive.
Her escape? Marry some random count she’s been writing letters to (honestly… risky but okay).

Meanwhile, her sister Tella? Chaos gremlin energy ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿ”ฅ
She wants freedom NOW.

๐Ÿ›ถ The Setup (AKA: Tella Is the Mastermind)

Plot twist:
Tella secretly arranged EVERYTHING.

She teams up with Julian (๐Ÿ‘€ suspicious boy alert) and essentially tricks Scarlett into attending Caraval.

Scarlett thinks:
๐Ÿ‘‰ “Quick trip, then I’ll go back and get married.”

Reader knows:
๐Ÿ‘‰ GIRL. NO.

๐ŸŽญ Welcome to Caraval (Nothing Is Real… Or Is It?)

The game begins:

  • Tella is “kidnapped” by Legend

  • Players must follow clues to find her

  • Winner gets a wish

Scarlett enters the game and immediately:

  • Gets confused

  • Gets manipulated

  • Starts catching feelings for Julian ๐Ÿ˜

๐Ÿงฉ The Clues (Dream Logic Activated)

The clues are NOT logical. At all.

We get:

  • A creepy hotel ๐Ÿจ

  • A cursed castle ๐Ÿฐ

  • A shady fortune teller ๐Ÿ”ฎ

  • Magical cider that alters perception ๐ŸŽ

  • A literal leap of faith ๐Ÿ•ณ️

Everything feels like a dream. Or a trap. Or both.

๐Ÿ’” Romance + Emotional Damage

Scarlett falls for Julian… but:

  • He’s hiding things

  • He lies

  • He’s clearly part of the game

AND YET… we still love him. Classic. ๐Ÿ˜ฉ

๐Ÿ˜ฑ The “Deaths” (THIS is Where It Gets Wild)

Julian “dies.”
Scarlett is DEVASTATED.

Then:

  • She finds Tella

  • Tella appears to be in serious danger

  • Scarlett believes EVERYTHING is real

And then…

๐Ÿ‘‰ Tella jumps off a balcony and dies.

YES. WHAT. ๐Ÿ’€

๐Ÿ’ก The Twist (AKA: You’ve Been Played)

Here’s the truth:

  • It was ALL a performance

  • The actors (including Julian) can’t actually die

  • Tella was NOT protected by the magic

BUT…

Tella KNEW Scarlett would wish her back.

Because:
๐Ÿ‘‰ Scarlett loves her more than anything ๐Ÿ’”

And THAT makes the wish work.

๐Ÿ’ƒ The Afterparty (Because Of Course There’s One)

Everyone’s alive.
Everything was staged.
Scarlett is emotionally wrecked but also… changed.

She:

  • Stands up to her father ๐Ÿ’ช

  • Chooses love ๐Ÿ’‹

  • Gives Julian another chance (risky but okay, I get it)

๐Ÿช™ The Sequel Setup (HELLO DRAMA)

Tella receives a mysterious coin + note:

๐Ÿ‘‰ She owes someone a debt.
๐Ÿ‘‰ And they’re coming to collect.

Cue:
Book 2: Legendary ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ”ฅ

๐ŸŽฏ Why This Worked for Me

Let me be real for a second…

I am NOT usually a fantasy reader.
But this?? This felt different.

๐ŸŽฌ The The Game Comparison (And Why It’s Spot On)

That constant feeling of:

  • “Is this real?”

  • “Am I being manipulated?”

  • “WHAT IS HAPPENING???”

It’s the same psychological tension that makes The Game so addictive.

And I ate it UP. ๐Ÿฟ

✨ What I Loved

  • Fast-paced & addictive

  • Easy to read (huge win for fantasy beginners)

  • Twisty plot that actually pays off

  • Strong emotional core (sisters > everything)

  • Atmosphere = magical chaos in the best way

๐Ÿค Tiny Critiques (Barely)

  • Sometimes confusing (but also… kind of the point?)

  • Julian is ๐Ÿšฉ but we forgive him because… reasons

๐Ÿ“š Final Thoughts

This book completely caught me off guard.

It’s:

  • Magical but not overwhelming

  • Emotional but still fun

  • Twisty without being exhausting

And now I’m fully invested ๐Ÿ˜ญ
Yes, I will be reading the next book immediately.

Final Rating: 5/5 Stars

✨ Unexpected favorite
✨ Fantasy for people who don’t “do fantasy”
✨ Emotional, dramatic, and just plain FUN
